Peak Performance workshop with Nick Byrne October 1st and 2nd in Liverpool

Teatro Pomodoro in collaboration with Impropriety presents:
Peak Performance workshop with Nick Byrne October 1st and 2nd

Can we perform at our best more often? Why does everyone warm-up differently, and is their common ground for how best to prepare for a performance? Can I prevent myself going ‘into my head’, whilst I am in the wings mid-show, or out-of- focus mid-scene?

Beginning from the basis of impulse technique and mindfulness, Nick Byrne first created a course called “In The Moment” to discover exercises allowing improvisers to genuinely feel what it is like to be in this mindset; enabling them to recall that feeling and re-visit it more often.

After working with Olympic athletes at the Australian Institute of Sport, to help them retain a state of readiness, whatever might happen before or during their events, Nick re-applied his discoveries back to the theatre. The result is a collection of techniques that will liberate you from worries that are less than useful, take you out of your head and into the moment, allow you to keep whatever warm-up activity you like, and give you a more consistent, satisfying, and enjoyable performance.

This workshop consists of more practical scene- work than the description suggests, (including time to examine your own individual concerns), with a healthy dose of unusual experiential exercises. These provide a unique set of tools that are easily applicable to any style of performance.
Impropriety is hugely excited to be involved with this workshop and encourage anyone with a love of the spontaneous to come along and learn alongside us.

About Nick Byrne

Nick Byrne is Artistic Director and creator of Improvention; Australia’s international festival of unscripted theatre. Nick also operates Impro ACT, Canberra’s major improvisation company. Nick also operates Impro ACT, Canberra’s major improvisation company. Nick has worked as a musician, scripted actor, director and producer, on stage, radio, and screen.

In the field of applied improvisation, Nick has taught United Nations peacekeepers to be culturally sensitive on international deployments, even improvising with Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. He has also worked with Olympic Athletes to deal with on-field adversities, and helped educators at the National Gallery of Australia to give satisfying experiences to niche tour groups, such as dementia patients.

Nick believes improvisation is a lifestyle and an ethic. He believes that theatrically, improvisation is a choice of technique, no better or worse than any other, and that there is no reason to prove we are improvising - we simply do good theatre or not, and it happens to be improvised. He believes that whilst certain elements require experience and skills, mixed-level casts can often create the most genuine experience. His experience on stage is all about his relationship and his collaboration, with his scene partners and the audience. He believes in bold risks and relentless experiments.
